Awarenessinfo Media has gathered that the UK and France are ready to deploy warships and air defence assets to Cyprus following a suspected Iranian drone attack on a British base, underscoring the escalating tensions in the Middle East.
British Prime Minister Keir Starmer announced on Tuesday that the UK would send helicopters with counter-drone capabilities and the HMS Dragon, a Type 45 air defence destroyer, to the Eastern Mediterranean. "The UK is fully committed to the security of Cyprus and British military personnel based there," Starmer said, emphasizing the UK's commitment to protecting its interests and allies.
The HMS Dragon, with a crew of over 200, is one of the most capable air defence warships globally, capable of launching eight missiles in under 10 seconds. This deployment comes after a suspected Iranian drone attacked the British airbase in Cyprus on Monday, causing minimal damage.
French President Emmanuel Macron also announced that France would deploy its nuclear-powered aircraft carrier, Charles de Gaulle, to the Mediterranean, escorted by its air wing and frigates. "And we will continue this effort as much as necessary," Macron said, highlighting France's solidarity with its allies.
The UK's initial denial of US access to its bases in Cyprus, citing international law concerns, preceded the drone attack. The incident has heightened tensions between the US, Israel, and Iran, with Iran warning of a wider escalation if countries remain passive.
The deployment of these assets demonstrates the UK and France's commitment to regional security and their willingness to protect their interests. As tensions continue to rise, the international community remains vigilant, awaiting further developments.
