Awarenessinfo media has gathered that in a significant development aimed at bolstering national security, Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Tunji Disu has submitted a detailed framework for the establishment of state police to the Senate Committee on the Review of the 1999 Constitution.
The 75-page document, titled "A Comprehensive Framework for the Establishment, Governance, and Coordination of Federal and State Police," was presented to Deputy Senate President Barau Jibrin, who chairs the Senate Constitution Review Committee, by Olu Ogunsakin, Chairman of the committee set up by the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) to explore the modalities of state police creation.
According to Ismail Mudashir, Special Adviser on Media to Barau Jibrin, the framework contains professional insights and recommendations from the police, derived from extensive consultations and a thorough assessment of the operational, legal, and administrative implications of instituting state police in Nigeria.
Speaking on behalf of the IGP, Ogunsakin said the framework contains professional insights and recommendations from the police on the proposed creation of state police.
"The report covers the considered views, professional insights, and strategic recommendations of the force, with the expectation that it will meaningfully contribute to ongoing deliberations and assist in shaping informed, balanced, and pragmatic decisions on this critical aspect of national security architecture," Ogunsakin said on behalf of IGP Disu.
The framework submission comes as President Bola Tinubu has urged the National Assembly to create a legal framework for state police establishment, emphasizing the need for strengthened security across the country.
Barau Jibrin commended IGP Disu for the proactive step, stating that the proposal aligns with President Tinubu's agenda for enhanced security. The Senate Committee will review the framework alongside other submissions for the constitutional amendment process.
The move has sparked hope for improved security in Nigeria, with the NPF's framework expected to play a pivotal role in shaping the country's security architecture.
