| Aminu Gwarzo, Kano State deputy governor |
Awarenessinfo media has gathered the news that in a shocking turn of events, Aminu Gwarzo has resigned from his position as the Deputy Governor of Kano State, effective immediately.
This development comes amidst ongoing impeachment proceedings initiated by the Kano State House of Assembly over allegations of gross misconduct, abuse of office, and breach of public trust.
Gwarzo's resignation was confirmed by his Chief Press Secretary, Ibrahim Shuaibu, on Friday evening, March 27, 2026. The move is seen as a strategic decision to avoid further political turmoil and potential removal from office.
The Kano State House of Assembly had commenced impeachment proceedings against Gwarzo earlier this month, citing allegations of diverting funds allocated to local government administrations for purposes other than those intended.
The Majority Leader of the Assembly, Lawan Dala, revealed that Gwarzo, while serving as Commissioner for Local Government, allegedly participated in the diversion of funds, amounting to millions of naira.
The allegations against Gwarzo include:
- Receiving kickbacks from local government councils
- Approving unauthorized payments to a private firm
- Abuse of office and breach of public trust
The Assembly had given Gwarzo a two-week deadline to respond to the allegations, which expired without a formal response from the deputy governor.
Gwarzo's resignation comes after Governor Abba Yusuf, members of his cabinet, and state lawmakers defected from the New Nigeria People's Party (NNPP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC) in January. Gwarzo, however, refused to join the APC, leading to speculation about the motivations behind the impeachment proceedings.
The Kwankwasiyya Movement, a major political bloc in Kano State, released a statement emphasizing that Gwarzo's resignation was not an admission of guilt and that he maintains his innocence. The movement has urged supporters to remain calm and law-abiding.
As the political landscape in Kano State continues to evolve, Gwarzo's resignation marks a significant development, with potential implications for the state's governance and future political dynamics.
