Awarenessinfomedia has gathered that devastating incident has shaken the University of Ibadan (UI) community, as a 200-level medical student, Ifeoluwa Akinmade, reportedly took his own life after struggling with academic performance The news has sent shockwaves across social media, with many calling for increased support for students grappling with mental health issues.
Akinmade, a promising young medical student, was said to have consumed a harmful substance, believed to be Sniper, on Saturday midnight. Despite receiving urgent medical attention at the University College Hospital (UCH), he succumbed to his injuries on Sunday evening.
The UI Medical Students Association (UIMSA) released a statement expressing their grief, urging students to seek help when needed, and sharing their challenges with friends and seniors. "It is with deep sorrow and heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our brother and colleague, Ifeoluwa Wisdom Akinmade," the statement read.
Reports suggest Akinmade's death may be linked to a low Continuous Assessment (CA) score, highlighting the immense pressure students face in academia. Daniel, an X user, wrote, "Even when you're thinking of doing it, think of what your parents will go through! Suicide is never an option, please!".
This incident echoes a disturbing trend of student suicides in Nigerian universities, often linked to academic struggles. In 2025, a similar incident occurred at Obafemi Awolowo University, where a medical student took his life after failing exams.
The university management has yet to issue an official statement, but the student community is rallying around the call for increased mental health support. As Hon. Jesugbemi, a social media influencer, aptly put it, "Friends, there is absolutely nothing that should happen to you that should lead you to take your life. Kindly seek help when necessary and share your challenges with friends and senior people around you".
If you or someone you know is struggling, please reach out to a trusted friend, family member, or mental health professional. Help is available. Say no to suicide!
