Awarenessinfo media has gathered the news that the Nigeria's government has signed a new deal that will enable Britain to deport thousands of failed asylum seekers and criminals to the West African country.
The agreement, signed by Nigerian Minister of Interior Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo and UK Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood, marks a major breakthrough in the fight against illegal migration and organized crime.
Under the deal, Nigeria will accept UK-issued letters as an alternative identification certificate for individuals without valid passports, removing a major administrative hurdle to deportation.
This move is expected to speed up the removal of 961 Nigerian failed asylum seekers and 1,110 foreign national offenders currently in the UK.
The agreement also includes provisions for joint operations and intelligence sharing to tackle criminal gangs abusing visa routes, as well as measures to combat cybercrime and fraud. Nigeria has pledged to review its laws to ensure tougher sentences for immigration-related offences.
"This partnership demonstrates our shared commitment to building a migration system that is safe, orderly, and mutually beneficial," said Tunji-Ojo, emphasizing Nigeria's resolve to protect its citizens while holding accountable those who abuse legal migration pathways.
UK Minister for Border Security and Asylum Alex Norris hailed the deal as a significant step in restoring order to the UK's immigration system. "Anyone who abuses our systems, breaks our laws, or tries to cheat their way into Britain will be stopped and removed," Norris said.
The deal is part of broader diplomatic engagements during President Bola Tinubu's state visit to the UK, the first by a Nigerian leader in 37 years. It reflects Nigeria's commitment to fulfilling its international obligations and strengthening cooperation with the UK.
As the agreement takes effect, Nigerians without legal status in the UK can expect increased deportation efforts. The deal's success will depend on rigorous implementation and cooperation between the two countries.
