| Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State |
Awarenessinfo media has gathered that the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) is grappling with a critical juncture in its history, as Governor Dauda Lawal's recent defection to the All Progressives Congress (APC) has left the party with only two remaining governors, Seyi Makinde of Oyo State and Bala Mohammed of Bauchi State.
Speaking at the expanded meeting of the PDP board of trustees (BoT) in Abuja on Tuesday, Makinde acknowledged the challenging period the party is going through, describing it as a testing time for Nigeria's democracy.
"It is a challenging period for us as leaders and members of the Peoples Democratic Party. It is also a challenging period for democracy in Nigeria," Makinde said, emphasizing the need for party leaders to be mindful of their actions and how history will judge them.
Makinde revealed that discussions with seasoned politicians and observers suggest that Nigeria's current political climate is unprecedented, with many expressing concerns over the party's stability and future prospects.
"I have been talking to people of knowledge, people who have been involved in the political evolution of this country, and none of them have seen a political landscape like what we are witnessing today," he said.
Despite the daunting challenges, Makinde expressed confidence that the party will weather the storm, citing the adage that "weeping may endure for the night, but in the morning, joy cometh."
"We are only two remaining, but we are not bothered," Makinde said, emphasizing the party's resilience and determination to bounce back stronger.
As the PDP navigates this difficult period, Makinde's words serve as a call to action for party leaders to reflect on their strategies and work towards rebuilding the party's strength and credibility.
The defection of Dauda Lawal, a former aspirant for the PDP presidential ticket, has raised questions about the party's ability to retain its strongholds and appeal to voters in future elections.
