Awarenessinfo media has gathered the news that a significant development in Nigeria-UK relations has emerged following President Bola Tinubu's state visit to the United Kingdom, where a landmark agreement was signed to facilitate the deportation of Nigerian nationals without the right to remain in the UK. 

The deal, formalized through a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on immigration cooperation, aims to strengthen bilateral ties and streamline repatriation processes.

Key Aspects of the Agreement:

Scope of Deportation: The agreement specifically targets Nigerian nationals who do not have the legal right to stay in the UK, including failed asylum seekers, visa overstayers, and criminals. It explicitly excludes foreign nationals of other countries, focusing solely on Nigerian citizens.

Verification Process: To ensure authenticity, returnees undergo rigorous identification checks both in the UK and upon arrival in Nigeria. This involves biometric matching and verification of personal documents.

Documentation: Deportees are expected to carry their legally acquired belongings and will utilize either a valid passport or, in certain cases, a UK-issued letter (UKL) for identification. The Nigerian Immigration Service will issue necessary documentation.

Appeals and Support: Individuals facing deportation can appeal based on human rights claims or integration challenges. Returnees will also have access to basic, medium-term, and long-term reintegration support, including airport reception, accommodation, job placement assistance, and potential financial aid.

Implementation: The agreement is set for an initial five-year term, with possible renewal, and requires both countries to keep each other informed about changes in domestic legislation affecting reintegration support.

This development marks a pivotal moment in Nigeria-UK cooperation on migration management, emphasizing mutual interests in handling deportation processes with respect for human rights.
