Awarenessinfomedia has gathered that in a stunning development that has sent shockwaves across Nigeria's law enforcement circles and beyond, Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Kayode Egbetokun has tendered his resignation, effective immediately, following a directive from President Bola Tinubu.
The move, confirmed by reliable presidency sources on Tuesday, marks a significant shift in the country's security landscape and raises questions about the future direction of the Nigeria Police Force.
According to sources close to the presidency, President Tinubu instructed Egbetokun to step down on Monday night, and the IGP subsequently submitted his resignation letter on Tuesday morning. This unexpected turn of events has left many wondering about the circumstances surrounding Egbetokun's departure, just over two years into his tenure as the 22nd IGP of Nigeria.
Egbetokun's appointment as IGP on June 19, 2023, was seen as a significant move by the Tinubu administration to revamp the country's law enforcement agency.
He was confirmed by the Police Council in October 2023, amidst expectations of reforms and enhanced security measures to tackle the country's myriad security challenges.
At the time of his appointment, the Police Act 2020 was in operation, which stipulates in Section 7 that the IGP shall hold office for a four-year term.
However, Egbetokun's tenure was also marked by controversy surrounding his eligibility to continue in office. Born on September 4, 1964, Egbetokun was initially set to retire on September 4, 2024, upon reaching the mandatory retirement age of 60, as per civil service rules.
The National Assembly's hurried passage of a bill in July 2024 to amend the Police Act 2020, allowing the IGP to remain in office "until the end of the term stipulated in his appointment letter," sparked intense debate on whether the tenure extension granted to Egbetokun was appropriate. The amendment effectively extended his tenure until 2027, sparking concerns about the motivations behind the move.
Despite the controversy, Egbetokun remained in office, navigating the country's complex security landscape.
However, it appears that the recent presidential directive has brought an end to his tenure, leaving many wondering about the implications for the Nigeria Police Force and the country's security architecture.
