Awarenessinfomedia has gathered that the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) has announced plans to shut down Terminal 1 at Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA) in Lagos for comprehensive rehabilitation and expansion.

This move is part of the MMIA Rehabilitation and Expansion Project, aimed at transforming the airport into a world-class facility.

The shutdown, expected to take place in March, is necessary due to the terminal's long-standing infrastructure limitations. The 47-year-old terminal has been experiencing frequent power outages, including a recent incident on Saturday, which was caused by a fault in the changeover circuit. FAAN's Managing Director, Olubunmi Kuku, assured passengers and stakeholders that the authority is committed to delivering a safer and more reliable passenger experience.

The rehabilitation project, budgeted at ₦712.25 billion, will involve stripping the terminal down to its core framework and rebuilding all mechanical, electrical, and plumbing systems.

The project is expected to take approximately 22 months to complete. A temporary departure terminal, covering 8,000 square meters, has been constructed to accommodate passengers during the rehabilitation period.

FAAN has urged passengers to plan ahead and arrive early at the airport to avoid disruptions. The authority has also assured that measures are in place to minimize inconvenience, including the use of the temporary departure terminal and optimized flight scheduling.

The rehabilitation project has received strong backing from the federal government, with Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, emphasizing the need for modernization. The project is part of a broader ₦919.1 billion package for infrastructure upgrades in the country's aviation sector.
