Awarenessinfomedia has gathered that the Rivers State House of Assembly has suspended the impeachment proceedings against Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his deputy, Ngozi Odu, following intervention by President Bola Tinubu. The decision was made during a plenary session at the assembly in Port Harcourt, the state capital, on Thursday.
The impeachment process was initiated in January 2026, with 26 members of the assembly signing a notice alleging gross misconduct against Fubara and Odu. The allegations included demolishing the state assembly complex, extra-budgetary spending, withholding funds meant for legislators, ignoring court rulings on financial autonomy, and making illegal appointments.
A Rivers State High Court had issued an interim injunction restraining the Speaker, Clerk, and Chief Judge from advancing the impeachment, pending further hearings. The court ruling was part of the broader reconciliation efforts led by President Tinubu to de-escalate tensions in the state.
The suspension of the impeachment proceedings is seen as a positive step towards resolving the political crisis in Rivers State. President Tinubu's intervention has been welcomed by many, and efforts are underway to restore peace and stability in the state.
Governor Fubara has been at the center of a power struggle with his predecessor, Nyesom Wike, the current FCT Minister. Fubara's defection from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC) in December 2025 has been seen as a significant development in the state's politics.
The suspension of the impeachment proceedings is a welcome development, and stakeholders are hopeful that it will pave the way for a peaceful resolution to the crisis in Rivers State.
