Awarenessinfomedia has gathered that the Nigerian Senate has pledged to conclude the amendment of the 1999 constitution to pave the way for the creation of state police before the end of 2026, according to Yemi Adaramodu, senate spokesperson.
This development follows President Tinubu's recent calls for the amendment of the constitution to establish a decentralised police force, with the Senate and House of Representatives receiving separate requests to initiate the process.
"We are going to commence the process of reviewing the constitution for the establishment of state police immediately we resume next week," Adaramodu told Punch on Friday. "We want to assure Nigerians that before the general election, we would have amended the constitution to allow for the creation of state police."
Adaramodu emphasized that significant groundwork had already been done on the proposal, but legislative attention had shifted to the electoral amendment. He noted that the Senate would expeditiously treat the matter, aiming to complete the amendment before the end of the year.
"The President has signed into it, the state governors too have signed into it, and the National Assembly is in love with it," Adaramodu said, describing state police as a widely supported proposal. "State police is a popular demand."
The Senate's commitment to the amendment follows nationwide consultations, including stakeholder meetings across the geopolitical zones. Adaramodu explained that the Senate had put the constitution review on hold temporarily to focus on the electoral bill, which has since been signed into law, and the 2026 Appropriation Bill.
"Before now, we had already done a lot; we went on a little break for the electoral bill, which has just been signed into law," he said. "We were under pressure of time to deliver the electoral amendment. But now that we have dealt with that, we are picking the constitution review immediately."
The proposed state police have been touted as a solution to address insecurity challenges in Nigeria, with many arguing that a decentralised police force would be more effective in tackling local security issues.
The Senate's commitment to completing the amendment by the end of 2026 has been welcomed by many Nigerians, who are eager to see reforms that could improve the country's security landscape.
