Awareinfomedia has gathered that a faction of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Oyo state, backed by Nyesom Wike, Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), has urged the Kabiru Turaki-led national working committee (NWC) to seek reconciliation amidst the party's ongoing internal crisis.
This call comes after a high court judgment nullified the party's national convention held in Ibadan on November 15, 2025, which elected Turaki as chairman. The presiding judge, Uche Agomoh, ruled that the convention was organized in disregard of court orders and barred the Turaki-led NWC from parading as the party's leadership.
The judge emphasized that the PDP cannot disobey court orders and then seek judicial approval for actions taken in defiance of those orders. Instead, the party can only operate through a caretaker committee until a proper and lawful national convention is held.
Turaki, a senior advocate of Nigeria (SAN), has criticized the verdict, stating that the judge granted reliefs not requested by any party. He has filed a notice of appeal and a motion for stay of execution of the verdict.
Abdulrahman Akinoso, chairman of the PDP caretaker committee, has urged the Turaki faction to "seek reconciliation rather than pursuing a futile legal battle". He emphasized the party's commitment to unity and democratic principles.
The PDP's internal crisis stems from a series of conflicting court judgments preceding the November 2025 convention. Some federal high courts in Abuja halted the event over alleged breaches of party constitution and electoral laws, while the Oyo state high court in Ibadan cleared the PDP to proceed.
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has rejected the request to recognize the Turaki-led NWC, citing multiple court verdicts. The party's Board of Trustees (BoT) and 30 state chairmen have closed ranks around Turaki, dismissing the Ibadan court ruling.
As the PDP navigates this challenging period, stakeholders are watching closely, hoping for a resolution that will strengthen the party ahead of the 2027 general elections.
