Awarenessinfomedia has gathered that the Nigeria Football Federation's (NFF) petition against the Democratic Republic of Congo (DR Congo) for allegedly fielding ineligible players during the World Cup playoffs is still pending before FIFA, with no official communication on a ruling timeline.
Shehu Dikko, chairman of the National Sports Commission (NSC), has expressed confidence in the NFF's case, citing documented breaches of rules and regulations.
Speaking after meeting with President Bola Tinubu at the State House, Dikko emphasized that Nigeria has a "good case" against DR Congo and is "confident" of the evidence. The NFF had filed the petition with FIFA in December, alleging deceit by the Congolese FA in clearing players for its national team despite their status contravening citizenship laws.
Dikko explained that FIFA's independent bodies, including the disciplinary committee and ethics committee, are handling the case and will announce their decision when ready. "When they finish, they will tell the world," he said, urging patience and focus on upcoming competitions, including the next AFCON and WAFCON.
Meanwhile, the sports sector has contributed significantly to Nigeria's economy, inducing almost 140,000 jobs in 2025, both directly and indirectly. Dikko highlighted the sector's growth, citing the New Hope Initiative for Nigeria Sports Economy framework, which aims to drive economic growth and development through sports.
The NSC chairman also emphasized the need for infrastructure development to support the growing sports sector, discussing plans with President Tinubu to fast-track sporting infrastructure development across the country.
In November, Dikko revealed that sports contribute almost one percent to Nigeria's GDP, highlighting the sector's potential for economic growth and development.
