Awarenessinfomedia has gathered that the Oyo State Police Command has announced the arrest of seven suspects allegedly involved in the January 6 attack on the Old Oyo National Park, which resulted in the deaths of five forest guards. The suspects, including the alleged mastermind and ringleader, were apprehended following an intensive, intelligence-driven operation.
Details of the Attack
The attack occurred on January 6, 2026, at approximately 9:00 p.m. when armed bandits, reportedly numbering 10, arrived at the park's Oloka axis on motorcycles, armed with sophisticated firearms. They invaded the park office, launching a violent assault on forest rangers and other personnel, resulting in five fatalities.
Investigation and Arrests
Commissioner of Police Femi Haruna ordered the immediate deployment of operational assets to the area and directed the Command Monitoring Unit to take over the investigation. Three suspects were initially arrested: Mohammed Dangi, 52; Abubakar Abdullahi; and Sheu Usman. During interrogation, they confessed to the crime and provided detailed accounts of the attack.
Further intelligence-led investigations led to the arrest of four additional suspects on January 25: Toro Malami, 43; Usman Alhaji Ummaru; Laolo Muhammadu, 22; and Usman Alhaji Isah, 32. The suspects have provided credible and actionable intelligence, aiding efforts to apprehend other fleeing gang members.
Police Commitment to Security
The Oyo State Police Command reassures residents of its commitment to safeguarding lives and property across the state. "Oyo State will never be allowed to serve as a safe haven for criminal elements," said DSP Olayinka Ayanlade, the command's public relations officer.
The police urge the public to refrain from spreading unverified information capable of causing panic and appreciate the support of Governor Seyi Makinde and the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, in strengthening the state's security architecture.
