Awarenessinfomedia has gathered that the Department of State Services (DSS) has announced that Nasir El-Rufai, former governor of Kaduna state, will be arraigned before a federal high court in Abuja on February 25, 2026, over alleged cybercrime and breach of national security.
The case, assigned to Justice Joyce Abdulmalik, stems from allegations that El-Rufai intercepted the phone communications of National Security Adviser (NSA) Nuhu Ribadu.
El-Rufai was taken into custody by the DSS on February 18, 2026, after spending two nights with the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).
The allegations against him include intercepting the NSA's telephone conversation, which is said to contravene the Cybercrimes (Prohibition, Prevention, etc) Amendment Act, 2024, and the Nigerian Communications Act, 2003.
Charges Against El-Rufai
The DSS has filed a three-count charge against El-Rufai, accusing him of:
1. Unlawfully intercepting the NSA's phone communications.
2. Failing to report individuals involved in the unlawful interception.
3. Compromising public safety and national security through the use of technical systems to access the NSA's phone lines.
El-Rufai has been in the custody of the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) over alleged corruption during his tenure as Kaduna governor. The ICPC confirmed that El-Rufai is in their custody in connection with ongoing investigations.
The allegations against El-Rufai stem from an interview he gave on Arise Television's Prime Time programme, where he claimed that someone wiretapped the NSA's phone, allowing him to listen to directives for his arrest. The DSS alleges that El-Rufai's actions constitute a breach of national security and cybercrime.
