Awarenessinfomedia has gathered that in a candid interview on the MIC ON podcast with Seun Okinbaloye, Nigerian music legend 2Baba has sparked a fresh debate in the Afrobeats community by naming Burna Boy as the biggest act in the genre, surpassing Davido and Wizkid globally.
2Baba's assessment is based on his understanding of the music industry and Burna Boy's global influence rather than financial success or fan base. "I have my favourite songs from all of them. But if I must be put on the spot, I think Burna Boy is at the top of the game right now," he said.
The veteran singer emphasized that his evaluation is not about comparing artists but rather acknowledging their unique styles and contributions to Afrobeats. "Different people have different styles, so it's not about one person being better than the other. Everyone's music is different, and people also have different tastes in what they enjoy".
2Baba believes Burna Boy is currently at the top of the chain, not just in Nigeria or Africa, but globally. "Based on common sense and my understanding of the music world, I think Burna Boy is currently at the top of the chain not just in Nigeria or Africa, but globally. That said, everyone in the industry is doing fantastically well".
This verdict comes as no surprise, given Burna Boy's impressive track record, including his Grammy Award win for Best Global Music Album in 2023 for "Love, Damini".
The Big Three debate has long been a contentious issue, with some fans and colleagues supporting it while others dismiss it as unnecessary. Tiwa Savage previously weighed in, saying Afrobeats goes beyond the Big Three and that the concept downplays the achievements of other successful artists in the industry.
As the Afrobeats landscape continues to evolve, one thing is certain – Burna Boy, Davido, and Wizkid are pushing the boundaries of Nigerian music, and their impact is being felt globally.
